The AOHS begins with a class in Career Preparedness. This course will give you the tools and knowledge you need for your sophomore, junior, and senior years. Course content spans from college and career preparation to computer literacy skills to ways to manage personal finances and reduce personal risk. Students will use and learn various technologies throughout course instruction. As a part of preparing you to be college and career ready, this course also equips you with the skills needed for business and industry, college, and lifelong learning. Biology gets you started and will be an important part of your ninth-grade year.

In your second year, you are introduced to the basics in the Foundations of Health Science course. This course introduces you to a wide range of health careers. To enhance what is taught about health careers in class, you will participate in the Bridging the Gap Program sponsored by Birmingham Education Foundation where students will be exposed to all aspects of local hospital systems during a series of site-visits throughout the year. The Career and Technical student organization, HOSA, will serve as a means to enhance classroom instruction while helping students develop leadership abilities, expand workplace-readiness skills, and broaden opportunities for personal and professional growth. You will also have an opportunity to participate in a Career Development Conference on Social Entrepreneur sponsored by Birmingham Education Foundation.

In your third year, the Therapeutic Services course is designed to inform you of the rapid changes in business and industry through a rigorous array of coursework and work-based experiences that prepare you for advanced learning and a wide range of health career opportunities. You are introduced to careers in therapeutic services including, but not limited to, nursing, medicine, physical therapist, surgical technologist, respiratory therapist, emergency medical technician, and others. As a member of HOSA, you begin to prepare for competition in events such as Medical Math, Medical Spelling, Medical Terminology, Emergency Preparedness, and others. Over the course of the year, you will participate in a series of job shadowing days supported by UAB Hospital/other area partners and attend the Interview Skills Career Development Conference. The conference and pre-sessions will prepare you for résumé drafting, dressing professionally, managing your social media, and mock interviews. During the summer after your junior year, you will have the opportunity to participate in an Academy Internship where you begin to apply what you’ve learned in a real-world setting. You will also be given the opportunity to participate in dual enrollment at Lawson State Community College.

This year in AOHS, you are introduced to Genetics, a field that will become very important in 21st-century healthcare. As a senior, you will also take what you’ve learned and apply it in a Health Services Internship, where you get to enjoy working alongside health services professionals in a real-world setting.
